Cover story: François Bangurambona Burundian François Bangurambona was a deputy minister in the Hutu government when Tutsi soldiers came into his office one day asking for the minister, who was in parliament at the time. As the soldiers left, they threw a grenade at him. Fortunately for François, his driver was parked on the street below, heard the explosion, came upstairs and found his body on the floor. He got the unconscious man into a car and later François was put on a plane to Kenya, where he lay in hospital for six months, unable to talk or hear. In 1995, François came to South Africa, where he now runs a car repair business in Nyanga, Cape Town, and his wife has set up a small hairdressing business. The image of the man on his shirt in the photograph is a Hutu bishop who was murdered. |
